Since stopping my lessons, I have been concentrating on getting Kinzzy to hack out alone. She has done this in the past but I haven't really had that much opportunity to do it until recently.
There is always someone on the yard who is able to come with me, which is great because I love the social side of it.

But, I have to admit I really rather like it, just me and Kinz! No one making the decisions for us, we go where we want and at what pace. She can still be a bit spooky but 99% of the time she is great and my signing is coming along fine! *laughs out loud*
She likes me to sing to her!! Bless.

Does anyone else feel the same about hacking? To be honest, I get more of a buzz out of solo hacking than I ever did out of my lessons. (oops! did I say that out loud) LOL

I used to be fine with my heavyweight cob. But i now have a 15.2hh Belgium Warmblood. She can be very spooky and joggy. She also has a habit of throughing her head and locking it sideways and running forward. i can correct this but it does put me on edge. and at the end of the day i have only had her a few months and she may just be able to feel that i am unsure. I will eventually but there is no point in doing it if you don't enjoy it. I am hoping to do intro later this season so hopefully that will give me more confidence. Also there have been more dog attacks resently. including on 2 people i know. so i guess that is in my mind.
Luv Elle

Hello all! I am new to this site and just started back in the saddle again. Was just curious, in America, we refer to riding in the outdoors on trails as "trail riding" is that what "hacking" is?  Is that a UK term?  Would love to know, I see that alot lately.  Also, I ride western however I ride in a "posse/endurance" saddle, very similar to an aussie saddle. Is that what you all use when you hack or do you ride english or that sort of disapline.  Thank you for letting me share. Take care! Kath

Hacking out just you and your horse is a brilliant way to bond with them! It also helps the horse to learn to be alot more confident by themselves! However, although your horse may enjoy hacking out on his own horses are herd animals and like to be with their friends so make sure you don't cut out hacking with other horses altogether!

I always hack alone, simply because I don't really have anyone else to ride with, and mainly because the one girl who will hack out with me always wants to gallop and jump.

I think it's good to have a mixture of hacking in company and alone, mainly to benefit the horse but it can be fun too! I love hacking alone, I can do what I want at my own pace, I don't have to slow down or catch up with the others, and I don't have to worry about your friend saying 'we're not going that way because my horse won't do this/that/the other'. It's also a good time to get away from the daily stresses of life! xXx

I love hacking alone, but it can be difficult depending on the horse you have. My appaloosa gelding is unbelievably bombproof, i have ridden him down the side of a bypass by himself without him flinching.
Obviously my two youngsters are nowhere near ready to hack alone, the three year old has only just been backed and showing him traffic now would be disastrous as he has a tendancy to rear when frightened. The other gelding, the four year old, Cally will happily hack in company but is still a bit too frightened to hack alone.
I loan a dutch warmblood (in my profile pic) and he can be very hyperactive on the road, bunny hopping and sidestepping and constantly jogging, but he is 100% safe, he's just enthusiastic about going out alone. However in company he shies and bites and kicks the other horses (possibly his dominance showing due to him eing a stallion) so i prefer to take him out alone.

I must say, there's nothing like going out by urself, just you and the horse without any interference with of other riders wanting you to slowdown/hurry up/go this or that way!!!!

i love it!
